Latest Rambler News making the headlines

in Winchester and Eastleigh from WINOL

MP for Eastleigh, Mike Thornton, goes blind for a day in an attempt to see what it’s like for the visually impaired to get around on Eastleigh’s streets. What if everyone in Eastleigh went blind for a day whenever Stephen Gough was in town?

We ask,”Is this a way out for the Naked Rambler Stephen Gough to go about naked in the town centre and live his life unclothed the way he chooses without anyone seeing him?”

The Eastleigh News reports:

“There many items of street furniture in Eastleigh town centre we take for granted and manage to avoid colliding with without thinking about it but many of these items can be hazardous for blind members of the community.”

“The MP donned a pair of spectacles which simulated the effects of glaucoma walked around the town guided by Marie Jenkins of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and Brian Anderson a partially sighted RNIB Volunteer.”

“Jenkins and Anderson gave the MP a commentary on the various problems they encountered on their journey.”

Stephen is a former British Royal Marine. In 2003–04 he walked the length of Great Britain naked and again in 2005–06 but was arrested. He subsequently spent six years in prison. Click here for the full story

While I’m on the subject of “clear”. “Does anyone know what that star is I can see out of my window? It’s now 21:45hrs, and it is to the west. It’s unusual because normaly stars (or is it a planet?) can’t be seen so clearly, if at all, due to the light polution from the security lights.” Stephen Gough

New Stephen Gough hearing before the Royal Courts of Justice on Tuesday June 9th 2015 in court 7 at 10:30am, the hearing is an appeal, as we understand it, by Gough’s lawyers against his conviction for breaching his ASBO, on the basis that he was not allowed to appear naked in court to defend himself. Naked rambler Stephen Gough appears nude via video link from prison

Stephen Gough lost an appeal against a conviction for the breach of an Asbo.

He appeared from Winchester Prison where he is serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence for breaching the order banning him from being naked in public.

His counsel Matthew Scott argued Gough should have been allowed to appear naked at the original trial.

The Telegraph

Matthew Scott

My client Stephen Gough, a former Royal Marine better known as the Naked Rambler, has now been in prison, largely in a segregation unit, for the best part of nine years.

Once the remission rules are taken into account, that is the equivalent of a sentence of nearly 18 years. It is about what you would expect to get if you committed a rape of an eight year old child. By my very rough calculations the cost of imprisoning him, ignoring altogether legal and police costs, has been about £330,000. His offence has been that he won't wear clothes in public.

Who is being the most ridiculous here: Mr Gough, or the Crown Prosecution Service?
